When asked to comment on US President Donald Trump announcing the US' withdrawal from UNESCO again, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said on Wednesday that China has noted that UNESCO and many countries have expressed regret over the US government's decision to withdraw from the organization once again. This marks the third time the US has withdrawn from UNESCO, and it has also consistently failed to pay its dues. This is not the behavior expected of a responsible major power, the spokesperson added.
The mission of UNESCO is to promote international cooperation in the fields of education, science, and culture, to foster mutual understanding and integration among civilizations, to maintain world peace, and to achieve common development. China has always firmly supported the work of UNESCO, Guo said.
"On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the establishment the UN, we urge all countries to reaffirm their commitment to multilateralism, support the international system centered on the UN with concrete actions, international rules based on international law, and the basic principles of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter," Guo said.
