Speaking at a UN high level meeting on implementing the two state solution on Tuesday, Zhai Jun, special envoy of the Chinese government on the Middle East issue, expressed China's firm support for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and urged the world to take concrete steps toward peace, according to the CCTV News.
Zhai urged the international community to take concrete action to realize the two state solution and put forward five proposals - urgently pursue a comprehensive ceasefire to alleviate the humanitarian crisis; uphold the principle of "Palestinians governing Palestinians" by advancing governance in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank; support Palestinian internal unity; safeguard the peace momentum for implementing the two state solution; adopt a shared, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable approach to security to achieve lasting stability in the Middle East.
China firmly supports the establishment of an independent State of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty based on the 1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as its capital, Zhai said. He called on the UN to admit Palestine as a full member at the earliest opportunity, urged all countries not to place obstacles in its way, and appealed to those states that have not yet recognized Palestine to do so without delay.
He stressed that implementing the two state solution is the only feasible path to resolving the Palestinian issue and represents the broadest international consensus. China hopes this meeting will inject new momentum into its realization, clarifying a timetable and mapping out a roadmap.
China will continue working with the international community to build on a Gaza ceasefire and advance an early, comprehensive, just and lasting resolution of the Palestinian question, said the envoy.
