Regarding the DPP authorities' recent claim that during the FISU World University Games in Germany, mainland delegation staff repeatedly pressured the organizers and interfered with activities of the Taiwan delegation, and "escalated" the issue beyond the "Olympic model," Chen?Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said on Wednesday that the "Olympic model" is the internationally recognized protocol for handling the Taiwan question in sports and the principle jointly observed by sports communities on both sides of the Straits. It provides the fundamental institutional guarantee for promoting cross-Straits sports exchanges and for athletes from both sides of the Straits to participate in international competitions.
The "Olympic model" was the principle that had been observed by international sports organizations as well as sports persons from the mainland and Taiwan island. Under the model, established under International Olympic Committee (IOC) rules, the island takes part in the Olympic Games under the name "Chinese Taipei," according to the Xinhua News Agency.
The DPP authorities' repeated rumormongering and provocations against the "Olympic model" are intended to exploit sports to pursue "independence," said Chen, noting that all sectors on Taiwan island, including those in the sporting community, should distinguish right from wrong, see through their separatist ulterior motives, and refuse to be drawn into their schemes.
